Subject:Low expectations anyone?
Security:Public

Taken from tsn.ca

***
WASHINGTON (AP) - United States President George W. Bush welcomed the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes to the White House on Friday, saying he could relate to the underdog team.

"I like to be around people who keep expectations low," the president joked.

The Hurricanes weren't picked to do much before the 2005-06 season. They surprised everyone, winning 52 games, posting a 112-point season and winning their first Stanley Cup title in June over the Edmonton Oilers.
***

Now even if it was a joke, it's certainly the kind of joke that no one laughs at, but instead just shifts around uncomfortably in their seats. I mean, I'm no political analyst type, but this comment seems too dumb, even for the President of the United States. Maybe he actually went into Iraq expecting nuclear winter, and that's why he keeps throwing the word 'victory' around.

Subject:Let's all play a game!

This game is called;
"What should James be when he grows up?"

Perhaps some explanation. I was chatting with my father the other day, and we got to the topic of work.
I said something to the effect of "I think I have a decent skill set, and while I'm not a genius, I'm also not particluarly unintelligent. My problem is lack of inspiration. i just need an idea."
He replied with "What about working as a steward on an airline."
I paused, realizing that it wasn't so far fetched as it first seemed. Of course, I'd have to get my french, and no doubt some specific training, but all in all, not unachievable.

Now my point is this, that came of the top of his head. Completely random, one idea, that seemed feasible.
So my question for all you is the same.
Make a suggestion, no matter how far fetched...well, no porn star's, or gay prostitute's, or anything like that, but other than that, shoot. Anything, please.

"Someday soon i'm gonna have to settle down,
before my bones start makin' that metal on metal sound.
the difference between me and other people is the greased palms,
i was never one to hold my breath when i release bombs.
it's possible that i can be huge, but i doubt it,
'cause my phone's off the hook, but that's about it.
handling my biz, i should really do a shipment
and try to make some money to buy some new equipment,
with a brand new mic and a room with insulation,
colored pencils, all i need is inspiration..."

Sometime around 12:30ish today I decided I'd have a crisis...
Many of you know that I recently found myself in a set-up that could see be graduating from NSCC with a Culinary Arts degree in about 2 years...
A little while ago I was convinced that I missed cooking and working in kitchens, but I'm beginning to suspect that 2 and 1/2 years at Swiss Chalet has me missing working with a few of my few longtime co-workers, and that I miss cooking and working in a kitchen with them.
Now the part of this that distresses me is the fact that for the first time in like, 4 years, I feel like I'm moving forward towards an actual career, but that all of a sudden, maybe I don't really want to be a cook at all. I enjoy cooking, but maybe it's something that I'd like to leave at that, a personal enjoyment...plus one of the last things I want to do is spend 2 years and some more dollars going to school for something that I don't really want to do. Been there, and done that, a la STU Criminology.
So what then? That's the question that I am now presented with. I'm not fucking 18 anymore. I'm getting married, hopefully within the year. Time, although still relatively plentiful, is starting to move faster. I don't want to be 30, or 35, and still be some jackass working a shitty job for shitty pay.

Ideas? Thoughts? Comments? Anything?

So in case anyone didn't know, I hate my job. I left Fredericton with the mentality that I would get a serving job, work 30 hours a week, and clear more than I ever did at Swiss Chalet as a manager. The part that I didn't compensate enough for was the fact that once your a "kitchen worker" as my resume states, it's nearly impossible to find work as a server. They all say, "well, I can give you a job on the line" or something to that effect. Very few managers are willing to hire someone to serve when they think they can get them (and they're experience) to work in a kitchen.

My solution: Get a job working as a Banquet Server for RCR Catering. They're so hard up for people that they often don't even do interviews, they just tell you when you start. This is the job I hate. I just got done working a 75 hour, 6 day work week. I missed the Atmosphere show, and the Rolling Stones/Bruins-Islanders game. I asked myself why I was doing this to myself, and could come up with a good answer.

My new solution: Go back to kitchens, and eventually go to cooking school.
So...last thursday, on my break from RCR, I went to Smitty's and Mexi's. Both seemed hopeful, although Mexi's didn't think they'd be hiring for about 3-4 weeks, Smitty's said to come back Sunday morning when the Managers would be there.
Friday I handed ina resignation letter to RCR.
Sunday morning I went to Smitty's, and was told the Kitchen Manager was busy, and he would give me a call. I was also informed by the Dining Room manager that she *thought* that all they were hiring for was part time dish. Discouraging.
Anyway, around 2:30ish, I get a call, asking if I can come down for an interview. Sitting out back on milk crates, we had a nice chat about why I wanted to work in a kitchen, and why I was leaving RCR. I mentioned that I was thinking of going to school for cooking. His response was...interesting.
It went something to the tune of...
You come work here, as a line cook. I'll pay you $8/hour. If everything is working well, in about a month you can start your apprenticeship. You'll alternate working and going to school in 6 month blocks. During which time you can collect EI. Final result, in 2 years you'll have completed your diploma, and it won't have cost a dime.

Conclusion:
For the first time in like, years, I fell as if I'm actually going forward, and no more 75 hour work weeks.
Huzzah!

This is too any one and everyone who may or may not be interested in what is referred to as the "Camp Mush Weekend".
Some explanation.
On the shores of Lake Mush-a-Mush (Nova Scotia) there lies a Luthern Church Camp. Through the week they run their own programs, but on the weekends, the camp is rented out to whomever may wish to rent it. St Johns Luthern in Mahone Bay is one such renter. Do not fear ye hellbound, although it is a church camp, no one cares if you are not christian, and no one will try to save your soul, and if they do, refer them to me. I'll refer you to some rum, and them to bugger off and let bygones (sp?) be bygones (again, sp?). There is a short church service, that your not obligated to attend, although it won't kill you, and it would be polite, and a short grace that is said before each meal, which you are welcome not to recite. Just keep your mouth shut.
What it is, is an oppurtunity to relax on the shore, with a perdy lil' beach, drink your perdy lil' face off, and take a weekend off. It runs the first weekend in August, the 4-6th maybe, not exactly sure right off. I will be leaving Fredericton on friday at approximatley 1pm'ish, via a rental car, and returning on (probably) Monday. Room for a least a few, if they wish. There is no charge, although we ask that you pony up a $10-20 donation to help cover the cost of food and rentals (yes, all meals are included, as are canoes, they bloody better be, and somewhere to sleep).
So if you like the beach and/or camping and/or drinking, or none of the above and still wish to partake in the tomfoolery and goodtimes, then please inquire within.
By that I mean email, lightening_strikes_twice@hotmail.com, telephone, (506) 471-4946, or leave a post here.
That is all.
-Yours truly, the Good Doctor, Bowles

Yeah, so I got a Visa statment today, and found out that I had somehow OVERPAID my account by almost $200...which explains alot about my poverty...so Lori and I went out to dinner.
Combine this with my Interest Relief being sent off today, and my last payment ($349) suspended due to my application, and that it is income tax time, I actually have money for once...I plan to get very drunk tomorrow (tuesday) night, so if anyone is not busy, give a shout...

STOP

#2
Is anyone interested in either Monday or Tuesday Street Hockey? I'm badly out of game shape and regular shape, and it must be remedied. Nothing serious, just some pick-up, probably behind the old Chestnut Club, or somewhere there abouts, 7ish or 8ish in the evening.
No skill or experience necessary. Anyone interested leave a post or give a call, 471 4946...

The NHL and RBK sports are considering launching a new form-fitting jersey to replace traditional ones.
Here's TSN's Bob MacKenzie's column explaining them
http://www.tsn.ca/columnists/bob_mckenzie.asp?id=153365

And the petition to stop them...
http://www.petitiononline.com/nhl66/petition.html

Personally I hate the thought of them. Jerseys that tuck into particularly high pants...that's just wrong.
If you're a hockey fan then I highly suggest you read it, and consider signing. If you're not, then sign it because I say so...

We are in the final round against thirteen other bands, however it is purely an online vote. What I need is for you guys to get yourselves and everyone you know to go onto http://www.supernova.com and register as a fan. After that, you need to go to http://www.supernova.com/events/rogers2005/ and vote for Lost. Thank you all so much in advance for the help and feel free to email me with any questions.

So here's the deal. The Royal Bank, by way of my NS Student Loan, decided it wasn't wortrh the effort to tell me that they were going to withdraw a $222.28 on the 1st day of every month, in conjunction with my $350 Federal Student Loan payment. I only found out the next day when I deposited my paycheck and realized that something was amiss. Got consolodation forms beings sent to me, so hopefully this will get worked out.

BUT

This marks the second time the Royal Bank has attempted to steal Christmas from me. Four years ago they tried to tell me that I wasn't in school anymore, and took $80, my last $80, just before Christmas. That time I fought the bastards, and got the money back. This time though, that $222 is gone.

So to the point, that money was going to rent me a car to go home for Christmas. I have to work Christmas Eve till atleast 8pm, so the bus is a no go, unless I take it Christmas day, which is a bullshitty idea that I want no part of. If anyone knows anyone, anyone at all, who is driving Nova Scotia bound, on December 24th, in the evening, and has room for one, or two, being the cat, but that's only a perk, room for one would do,
PLEASE PLEASE give them my number 471 4946, or my email, lightening_strikes_twice@hotmail.com
Even if you know some one who is in a similar situation, and may be willing to split a rental car, anyone who in any way may be of help. Anyone...
It would be greatly appreciated...

Snake-Eyes
You scored 64% Initiative and 87% Combat Prowess!

Expert in 12 Fighting systems? Master of all edged weapons? Commando
status? You are perhaps the most deadliest member of the team. You have
combined the best of both worlds...ancient and modern forms of combat.
On top of that you have a high moral code...probably why him and
"Scarlett" are in love. You saved her life but in exchange became a
mute and had your face heavily disfigured...

I know this is a little overdue, but it needs to be said.
Buck65's set was killer, I was surprised that the band wasn't there, but not surprised to see Claire there. I must admit, I was a litle afraid she might be a Yoko-Ono (not that I'm comparing Buck to John Lennon or anything) but same old Buck. One of these days I need to catch a show of his outside of Fredericton...seriously, the Fredericton music scene just doesn't get him. When you're there to see a jam band and you get Buck, well, the hippie's can't be blamed much. Regardless, killer set. I was surprised to hear him open with '65 Buick, some old Language Arts stuff, but it worked. And of course the regulars, Wicked and Weird, 4-6-3, The Centaur, and Kennedy Killed The Hat.
Carmen Townsend was alright, wasn't blown away or anything, but enjoyable.
And here it is...I didn't stay for Jimmy Swift. I know, I'm shocked too. What it really came down to is the Caf, as well as the Ballroom, are shitty venues for one reason. No tables, no chairs. On my feet for 8-9 hours at work, then for both Carmen Townsend and Buck 65. No more standing. If they'd had anything to sit on besides the floor I likely, no definitely, would have stayed, bought a few more drinks, and enjoyed what I'm sure was a great set from JSB. yeah I know, don't be a wussy and stand, but from 10am to 1am is enough, JSB or no JSB. Well, they got my money, so I'm sure Jimmy Swift will forgive me...

Peace,
James
